Let’s dive into the deeds:
Before you start with this beautiful crochet braided headband, here are some important things to know and some background around this pattern.
The Detail of the Braided Headband Crochet Pattern
You’ve probably seen that I love working in the 3rd loop of the Half Double Crochet! I seem to be using it in almost everything I create these days (like my baby blanket crochet pattern 🙂 ), but only because it makes this beautiful stitch that looks as if the rows are more braided than crocheted. The back of the headband is made out of alternating between half double crochet and single crochet, which leaves almost a lacey look and feel to the crochet headband!

Foundation Chain: ch51
Rnd 1: hdc in 2nd ch from the hook, hdc in each ch across until the last ch, 4hdc into last ch, turn so you can continue to crochet down the bottom of the ch, hdc across until you reach the 1st st, 3 hdc into the first ch. (104hdc)
Rnd 2: hdc in the 3rd loop only around until you reach the 1st st of the rnd (104hdc)
Rnd 3: sc in the 3rd loop only around until you reach the 1st st of the rnd, sl st into the 1st st of the round. (104sc)
Leaving a long tail, finish of two of the tree strips, but keep the yarn attached to the third one!
On the last strip, crochet only until you have 3 stitches left before the stitch marker / first stitch. This makes your stitch count perfect for attaching.
Attaching the braid strips:
You will now lay the 3 strips next to each other, making sure the one that still has the yarn attached to it is on the far right.
You will now be working in rows.
Row 1: ch1, sc into the same st, 4sc across the top of the braid. Now attach the middle piece by sc into the next st and then 4sc across. (Aim to make them as centre as possible on the top of the braid) Next, do the same as you did with the middle piece by sc into the next st and then 4sc across. Ch1, turn (15sc)
R2: hdc into the 1st st, *sc,hdc* rep from *to * across the row (you will end with a hdc), ch1, turn(8hdc,7sc)
R3: sc into the 1st st, *hdc,sc* rep from *to * across the row (you will end with a sc), ch1, turn(7hdc,8sc)
R4 – 8: repeat Row 2 and 3 alternatively until you reach row 9.
R9: hdc into 1st st, hdc2tog, hdc in the next 9 sts, hdc2tog, hdc into the last st, ch1, turn (13)
R10: hdc into 1st st, hdc2tog, hdc in the next 7 sts, hdc2tog, hdc into the last st, ch1, turn (11)
R11: hdc into 1st st, hdc2tog, hdc in the next 5 sts, hdc2tog, hdc into the last st, ch1, turn (9)
Finish off, leaving a long tail for securing the ends.
Now comes the fun part! Braiding the strips!
Lay you work in front of you and braid the 3 strips like you would braid your hair. Fold your two outside pieces over the middle strip, alternating between right and left. Make sure not to braid to lose or tight.
When you can’t braid anymore, use a stitch marker in each strip to mark out the top 4 stitches which you will crochet into to attach the 3 pieces.
Your piece must now face right side (side with little braids on the front) toward you with the stitch markers at the top.
Attach your yarn to the first st on the far right piece:
R1: ch1, sc into the same st, 4 sc across the top of the braid.
R 3: sc into the 1st st, *hdc,sc* rep from *to * across the row (you will end with a sc), ch1, turn(7hdc,8sc)
R4 – 8: repeat Row 2 and 3 alternatively until you reach row 9.

Do not finish off.
To attach the two sides together

Picture tutorial for the Braided Headband strips:
Round 1:
After making the desired length of foundation chain, crochet along the chain in the top loop. When you reach the last chain, insert 4 hdc into the same chain and turn your work so can now hdc into each of the bottom chains. Then when you reach the first stitch, place 3 hdc into the same stitch as the first hdc. You will continue to work in rounds.
Round 2 & 3:
For round 2 and 3 you will be working into the 3rd loop only of the half double crochet. In round 2 you will hdc into the 3rd loop and in round 3 you will sc into the 3rd loop. In the picture below you will see where to locate the 3rd loop which is on the back of your strip just beneath the “V” you normally work into.

Have a blessed day!! 🙂
Hello,
I am trying to make the adult pattern. I chained 51, but the math does not add up, if I make the first HDC in the second chain from the hook. It works if I do it from the third chain from the hook.
Questions:
1. To get 104 stitches around, do you start from the second chain in the hook or third chain?
2. I cannot get into the third loop- I did it in the second loop- is that okay? Do you have a video tutorial of this?
3. Do you have a video of this pattern? It would be very helpful.
Thank you.
Hi Bepsi! I hope you can forgive me for only replying now! The stitch count on the pattern is correct. It helps to mark the first stitch of the round with a stitch marker, so it’s easier to locate when you put the last 3hdc in the same stitch at the end.
Also, it’s totally fine if you work into 2nd loop of the stitch (back loop), your strap will have more of a ribbed look to them. I do have a picture tutorial on how to locate the third loop on my crochet messy bun free pattern.
Video tutorials for my patterns are in the works! 🙂
