Infinity Scarf Crochet Pattern

Who doesn’t love a nice, cozy and textured infinity scarf crochet pattern? I am simply in love with this crochet infinity scarf! Not only because it’s warm enough to keep me toasty on cold days, but because it only uses one easy crochet stitch! Yes! – You read that right! Only one stitch – The Half double crochet! I cannot stress enough how much I enjoy working with this stitch. It’s super versatile and the ways of using it is endless!! (I use it in almost every project that I make! – is it just me? :))
Anyway.. Back to the crochet infinity scarf! 🙂
I used the half double crochet in 4 different ways with this pattern – each technique creates their own different pattern style. Believe you me, you are going to LOVE this pattern!!

Let’s dive into the deeds:
Before you start with this beautiful infinity scarf crochet pattern, here are some important things to know and some background around this pattern.
The Textured detail of the infinity scarf crochet pattern
Since I was very young I loved scarves! Rightly so, because I’ve lived in the coldest towns in South Africa over the years! So a textured and cozy infinity scarf like this one, is always welcome around my neck!
The cold, snowy weather we are having these days also inspired me to chose a white / off white combo of colors for this pattern. Doesn’t it look just amazing?? 🙂

The detail of the crochet infinity scarf is created by using the Half Double Crochet in 4 different ways. They are:
- Crocheting into the 3rd loop of the Half Double Crochet
- Back loop only
- The beautiful textured stitch called the Back Crossed Half Double Crochet. (click on the link for the video tutorial!)
- Front loop only
Below are some photo’s of how these different techniques look like:

Here is a quick Tutorial on How to crochet the Back Crossed Half Double Crochet (bcr hdc) for your Infinity Scarf:
The Back Crossed Half Double Crochet is made out of 2 half double crochets (hdc) that are crossed from the back. This creates a beautiful textured stitch.
Back Crossed Half Double Crochet: *Skip 1 stitch and work a half double crochet into the next stitch. Yarn over and insert the hook around the back of the previous half double crochet into the skipped stitch (from front to back), yarn over and pull through one loop (3 loops on the hook|). Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on the hook.* Continue from * to * until the end of the row.
- To start, insert a half double crochet into the first stitch of the row. Then skip 1 stitch and half double crochet into the next stitch. (See the picture below)

- Next, work a half double crochet into the skipped stitch, going behind the last half double crochet made, so as not to catch it, inserting the hook from front to back and completing the half double crochet.

And that’s all there is to it for the Back Crossed Half Double Crochet! 🙂
I also have a video tutorial on this stitch, so just click on this link!
The pattern level:
This Infinity Scarf Crochet Pattern is for the Skilled Beginner. You need to know the following:
- How to read a pattern
- Crochet into the back loop only of a stitch
- Work into the 3rd loop of a half double crochet
- Crochet into the front loop only of a stitch

This seems to be a lot of info you need to know, but believe me, once you got all the techniques under the belt – you will definitely be making this as a gift or even in more that one color for yourself!
If you want to practice the techniques:
Make a practice square of the pattern by chaining only 21 chains and following the pattern as is. This will give you a feel for how the pattern works and how it should feel like.
That will give you the confidence to go ahead and make your beautiful textured infinity scarf!

Also it’s a great pattern to crochet while you watch your favorite tv shows or even a good movie! 🙂
Some FAQ and answers:
Can I adjust the size of the Infinity Scarf?
Yes! if you want to make the crochet infinity scarf wider, you can just go ahead and continue with the repeat of the pattern. Just keep in mind you will probably need more yarn if you do! 🙂

3rd Loop of the Half double crochet:
When looking at the half double crochet, you will see that in this pattern the 3rd loop is in the front of your work (the side facing you). The loop is located just below the stitch where you would insert your hook for a normal half double crochet.
Gauge:
Gauge is not particularly important, but here is mine for reference purposes:
10cm x 10cm / 4in x 4in = 12 rows x 14hdc
Finished Size:
Width x Length laying flat: 20cm / 7.8in x 132cm / 52in
Circumference: 66cm / 26in
Notes:
- The first row is worked into the back bumps of the foundation chain. This creates a beautiful finish to the piece. If you find this too intimidating, feel free to crochet into the foundation chain as normal.
- The pattern is worked flat and the edges are seamed or slip stitched together at the end.
- Turning chain does not count as a stitch.
- Number of stitches are shown in brackets () after each row.
- Use stitch markers at the end to keep your short ends together. This will make it easier to seam them together. You can also crochet the ends together by using the slip stitch.

Before connecting make sure that the textured side of the scarf is facing you, then fold in half so that the wrong side is facing outward and your sewing/crochet work is on the inside when you flip it over again.
To connect the short ends together there are two methods:
- Finish off the yarn, but leave a long tail for sewing. Weave the tail through your yarn needle and sew the two short ends together.
- Without finishing off your yarn after the last row, slip stitch down the short ends until you reach the end.
After you finished connecting the scarf, weave in all the yarn tails as much as possible.
And there you have it, your very own Infinity Scarf! 🙂
