Chilly weather is upon us here in South Africa, which means it’s time to crochet some quick and easy scarfs! And by quick and easy I mean this is the perfect crochet project for binge watching some Netflix! Under a comfy blanket with a delicious cup of coffee of course!

Before you start with this beautiful crochet cowl pattern, here are some important things to know and some background around this pattern.
The Detail of the cluster stitch cowl:
An great way for me to create beautiful crochet combinations is by using easy stitches. For this pattern we are using the easy cluster crochet stitch and the half double crochet. To round the cowl off I also added a “border” of single crochet and half double crochets, which if I must say looks absolutely gorgeous!

This crochet cowl pattern is an Easy crochet pattern. You need to know the following:

Some FAQ and answers:
Can I adjust the size of the crochet cowl pattern?
Yes! If you would like to make this crochet cowl bigger, you can do so at the starting chain. Crochet an even number of stitches + 1 for the turning chain and continue with the pattern as usual. If you want to make it higher up/wider, you can repeat rows 4 and 5 alternatively as much as you prefer. But remember if you are going to make it bigger/wider you will need more yarn than the pattern calls for.
What size yarn do I need for the crochet cowl?
For this pattern I used Kismet Lollipop Chunky Number 4 Worsted weight / chunky in the color Melange Denim. Which is a super soft 100% Acrylic yarn. You will need at least 100g/ 3.5oz (150m/ 165yards) of worsted weight yarn. Use the color and yarn you prefer. If you are looking for something similar to what I used you can get Red Heart Soft or Caron Simply Soft.

Crochet Cowl Pattern
This pattern is written in US Terms
Patten Level:
Easy / Beginner
Materials:
- Number 4 worsted weight yarn (100g/ 3.5oz) (150m/ 165yards)
- Size 6mm Hook (US J/10)
- Measuring tape
- Stitch Markers
- Tapestry Needle
- Scissors
Abbreviations:
- Ch = Chain
- Sc = Single Crochet
- Hdc = Half Double Crochet
- Dc = Double Crochet
- Sk 1 st = Skip 1 stitch
- Rep = Repeat
- St (s) = Stitch (s)
- CS = Cluster Stitch
Special Stitch:
Cluster Stitch:
Yarn over, insert hook into next stitch, yarn over, pull through (3 loops on the hook), yarn over and pull through 2 loops (2 loops on the hook). Yarn over, insert hook into same stitch, yarn over and pull through (4 loops on the hook), yarn over and pull though 2 loops (3 loops on the hook). Yarn over, insert hook into the same stitch, yarn over and pull through (5 loops on the hook), yarn over and pull through 2 loops (4 loops on the hook). Yarn over and pull through all 4 loops on the hook. You made a cluster stitch!
Gauge:
10cm x 10cm / 4in x 4in = 5 CS x 7 rows of CS and hdc
Finished Size:
Width x Length laying flat: 19.5cm / 7in x 36cm / 14in
Circumference: 72cm / 28in
Notes:
- The pattern is worked flat and the short edges are seamed together at the end.
- Important: Turning chain from row 4 and onwards counts as the 1st stitch of the row. You can place stitch markers in the turning chains to make it easier for you to find at the beginning and end of the rows.
- Number of total stitches are shown in brackets () after each row.
- Use stitch markers at the end to keep your short ends together. This will make it easier to seam them together.
Crochet Cowl Pattern:
Foundation Chain: ch81
Row 1: hdc in 2nd ch from the hook, hdc in each ch across, ch1, turn. (80hdc)
Row 2: sc in 2nd st of the row, sc in each st across, ch1, turn. (80sc)
Row 3: hdc in 2nd st of the row, hdc in each st across, ch2, turn. (80hdc)
Row 4: *sk 1 st, cs, ch1* rep from * to * across until the last 2sts, sk1 st, 1dc, ch1, t urn. (39cs,2dc(incl. ch2))
Row 5: hdc in 2nd st of row, hdc in each st across, ch2, turn. (80hdc)
Row 6-13: Repeat rows 4 – 5 alternatively until you have 13 rows. Ch1,turn.
Row 14: sc in 2nd st of the row, sc in each st across, ch1, turn. (80sc)
Row 15: hdc in 2nd st of the row, hdc in each st across. (80hdc)
At the end of row 15, fasten yarn off. Leave a long tail and use it to seam the short edges of the cowl together. Weave in ends.
