1. Crochet a Foundation Chain

crochet a foundation chain

After Choosing your yarn and hook, make a slip knot and chain an even amount of chains + 1 for the turning chain , or if you’re using a pattern, make the amount of chains the pattern calls for.

For the tutorial, I made a chain of 21. So 20 + 1 for the first turning chain.

2. Create a steady row for your clusters

Insert a half double crochet in the 2nd chain from the hook.

Place a stitch marker in this stitch as it will be your last stitch for the next row.

Continue to half double crochet in each chain across the row. At the end, chain 2 and turn you work.

3. Move to the 2nd row and start clustering

In the last 3 stitches you need to put 1 x cluster stitch and 2 double crochets. (Do not chain 1 after completing the cluster stitch)

7. Row 3! Chain 1 and turn!

completed row of clusters

Remember to count your stitches as you go. You should have 9 cluster stitches, 3 double crochets and 8 chain-spaces.

To start the 3rd row, chain 1 and turn our work.

8. Start the next row in the correct stitch

move on to the next row which is a row of half double crochets.

Half double crochet in the very first stitch and in every stitch across. Remember don’t work into the chain spaces, but the stitch created by the chain 1 you made after completing the cluster stitch.

At the end, chain 2 and turn your work.

9. Repeat step 3-5 again!

Cluster stitch down the row in alternating stitches (skip one stitch, cluster stitch, skip one stitch) across and 2 x double crochets in the last 2 stitches of the row.

  1. Hello Nadine,
Thank you for these tutorials! My grandmother taught me to crochet over 50 years ago and I have a mind to try it again but just needed a wee reminder! Going to get my hooks out the attic (maybe I will invest in new ones lol) and get practicing again!

    Inspired!

    Many thanks

    1. Hey Melanie! Thank you for your kind words! I’m sure you’ll remember how to when you pick up your hook again! It’s like muscle memory! And believe me, you can never have too many hooks! 🙂 Keep on practicing and you’ll crochet like a pro in no time!

      Have a splendid day! 🙂
