Let’s dive into the deeds:

Before you start with this Crochet Market Bag, here are some important things to know and some background around this pattern.

The Detail of the market bag

The detail of this market bag crochet pattern is created by the stitch I used which is called the Lacy Ladders stitch, a dainty openwork stitch made out of a combination of chains, single crochets and double crochets! The different height of the stitches forms little arches between the rows. So pretty!! πŸ™‚

This is a simple two row repeat pattern and works up fairly quickly!

The crochet flowers are also super easy to make! They add just the right amount of cuteness to the crochet market bag! Here is the link to the easy crochet pattern!

What Yarn Should I use?

I used #3 DK weight cotton yarn. The yarn I used ( Viola Cotton by Classic Yarns) is a blend of cotton and polyester, but if you can’t find the yarn I used in your country, please feel free to visit the links down below for some options!

You can basically use any type of yarn, but cotton is recommended. You can also switch to #4 worsted weight cotton yarn! But your crochet bag will come out slightly bigger than mine and your yarn yardage will also be different.

If you reside in the US you can use something like this #3 DK weight yarn or this #4 worsted weight yarn. All yarn listed here are 100% cotton.

Market Bag Crochet Pattern

This pattern is written in US Terms

Patten Level:

Easy

Materials:

Note – When choosing your yarn, go with the meter or yardage given if you are not using the same yarn that I used.

  • #3 DK Light weight 100% Cotton Yarn – 500m/546yd (250gr/8.8oz in Viola Cotton by Classic Yarns)
  • Size 4mm Hook (US G/6)
  • Measuring tape
  • Stitch Markers
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Scissors

Abbreviations:

  • Ch = Chain
  • Sl st = Slip Stitch
  • Sc = Single crochet
  • Sc2tog = Single Crochet 2 together
  • Dc = Double Crochet
  • Ch*-sp = Chain* Space (ch3-sp)
  • SK = Skip designated stitch
  • Sp = Space
  • Rep =Repeat
  • Nxt = Next
  • Beg = Beginning

Special Stitches:

Single crochet 2 together (Sc2tog):

1.  Insert your hook into center of your next working chain. Grab yarn (known as a yarn over) and draw through the chain stitch and up onto the hook so that you have two loops on your hook.
2.  With those two loops on your hook, repeat step one into the next stitch. You will now have three loops on your hook.
3.  Using your hook, grab yarn and draw it through all three loops on your hook, leaving just one loop on your hook. You’ve just single crocheted two stitches together.

Gauge:

Gauge is not particularly important for this pattern.

Finished Size:

Width = 11” / 28cm

Length = 15.5” / 40cm excl. straps

Straps (end to end) = 20”/51cm

Construction of bag:

This bag is worked as a single piece in 3 easy steps:

  1. Crochet a square.
  2. Gather top and bottom borders – these borders form the front and back of opening.
  3. Gather the sides and create the straps.

Notes:

  • As the gauge is not important in this pattern – crochet your length of your bag the same amount as the width measures. So, measure the width of your bag after you’ve crocheted at least 10 rows and then you have your length measurement to form a square.
  • Row 2 and 4 – the ch1 at the start of the row does not count as a stitch.
  • Row 3 – ch4 at the start of the row does count as a dc and ch1.
  • Stitch count is given in () at the end of each row.
  • [] Indicates that stitches between brackets should all be crocheted into the same stitch.
  • You can use #4 worsted weight yarn and its corresponding hook – your bag will then be a bit bigger than the finished size and depending on the yardage of the yarn used you may need more yarn.

Written Pattern:

1. Body of bag:

Foundation Chain (Multiple of 3+2): ch98

R1: 1sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1sc in each ch across, turn (97)

R2: ch1 (does not count as stitch), 1sc in 1st st, * ch3, sk2 sts, 1sc in nxt st; rep from * to         end of row ending in 1sc in last st, turn

R3: ch4 (counts as dc +ch1 here and throughout), 1dc in 1st st, * [1dc,ch1,1dc] into nxt st; rep from * to end ending in [1dc,ch1,1dc] in last st, turn

R4: ch1, 1sc in 1st sp, * ch3, 1sc into nxt ch1-sp; rep from * to end, turn

Repeat rows 3 and 4 until work measures 20”/51cm (or as long as it is wide to from a square) ending on row 4 repeat.

At the end of last row – turn your work and ch1.

Last row: 1sc in 1st st, * 2sc in ch3-sp, 1sc in nxt st; rep from * to end, turn (97sc)

At the end of row 12, do not turn – this is the Right Side of the bag.

Bottom border:

Rotate your work so that you are looking at the opposite end, the tail from your foundation chain will be on your left hand side. Join your yarn into the ch beneath the sc of row 1 (the sc on your right hand side as you are looking at your work). You will work into the foundation chain.

R1: ch1, 1sc in 1st ch, 1sc in each ch across, turn (97)

R2: ch1, 1sc in 1st st, * sc2tog in each of the nxt 2sts; rep from * to end, turn (49)

3. Gather sides and crochet straps:

Now you will gather the sides of the bag and crochet the straps. The stitch count is not that important, so long as you gather the sides of the bag.

Rotate your work to the right so that you are working down the side of the bag.

1st side:

R1: ch1, sc evenly along the side of the 13sc rows (i.e until you reach the body pattern portion row of the bag), 1sc in side of nxt sc, *2sc in nxt ch2-sp, 1sc in side of nxt sc; rep from * until 13sc rows remain, 1sc in side of each sc row, turn

R2: ch1, 1sc in each st across until end, turn

R3: ch1, 1sc in 1st st and eash of nxt 12sc, *sc2tog in nxt 2sts; rep from * until 13sc remain, 1sc in each of nxt 13sts

ch100 loosely (this forms the 1st strap), sk 33sts, connect to the side with sl st.

2nd side:

R1: ch1, 1sc in each st and each of nxt 12sc, *sc12tog in nxt 2 sts; rep from * until 13sc remain, 1sc in each of nxt 13sts

ch100 loosely (this forms the 2nd strap), sk 33sts, connect to the side with sl st.

You will now work in the round continuously working directly into nxt sts (DO NOT TURN AFTER ROUND IS COMPLETE).

Rnd 1: **1sc in each of nxt 13sts (including 1st st where strap connected with sl st), * sc2tog in nxt 2sts, 1sc; rep from * until 13sts remain before strap (note – sts may not align perfectly, that’s fine 😊), 1sc in each of the nxt 13sts before the ch100 strap; 1sc in each ch; rep from ** until you reach the beginning of round.

Rnd 2: 1sc in each st around the bag and straps.

Rnd 3: 1sc in each st around, at the end sl st to 1st st of rnd.

Cut yarn and fasten off. Weave in all ends securely and crochet 3 flowers to add to top edge of bag for extra cuteness!
